Jan 26, 2021 PC/Mac VST/AU/AAX. As its name would suggest OTT, from Serum developer Xfer, is not a plugin generally associated with subtlety. This is a multiband upward/downward compressor that specialises in smashed, pumping and aggressive sounds. This is the sort of plug you’ll either never use, or never be able to live without again. Xfer Records OTT—Free Multiband Compressor plugin. Xfer Records has released OTT, a multiband compressor effect plug-in for Windows and Mac. OTT is a re-creation of a popular aggressive multiband upwards / downwards compressor setting used by many dubstep and electro producers.

Cut Through Recordings has released Convergence Free, a freeware multi-band compressor effect for VST, VST3, AU, LV2, and AAX plugin hosts on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Convergence Free is a multi-band compressor based on the full version of Convergence ($45) with some limitations. The free demo version of the software can be used for an unlimited amount of time. It offers up to four bands (ten in the full version) and the compression display is disabled (it shows a Demo Mode overlay). Also, only up to 2X oversampling is available (up to 8X in the full version of the software). Other than these differences, the free and paid versions of Convergence are identical.

The plugin has all the features you’d expect to see in a multi-band compressor. Each frequency band comes with the Attack, Release, Threshold, Ratio, and Gain adjustments. The band range is adjusted by moving a horizontal slider placed on top of a real-time spectrum display. This method of range adjustment is quick and intuitive. Another workflow enhancement is the Global control panel which enables the user to quickly adjust a single parameter for all bands. For example, you could adjust the Threshold value on all active bands by moving a single control knob.

Unfortunately, the interface design isn’t the best. The control layout is fine, but the font size is a bit too small and the color contrast is too low. The interface isn’t unusable, but it could do with some design improvements. On a positive note, the spectrum display at the top of the interface is useful and well-implemented. Also, there’s a handy set of alignment controls in the lower-left corner of the UI. These are used to quickly set the relative width of the active frequency bands.
